Cassidy Launches Second Television Ad: Vets

BATON ROUGE- Bill Cassidy for U.S. Senate today launched their Second televised advertisement highlighting Senator Bill Cassidy’s commitment and work, fighting for real solutions for veterans. 

“Dr. Cassidy has used his medical background to take on the problems facing our veterans and pass legislation that works for them. He is an effective leader in Congress—keeping the VA accountable and ensuring veterans have the resources they need when reentering civilian life,” said Bill Cassidy for U.S. Senate Communications Director Ty Bofferding.

When first elected to the U.S. Senate, Cassidy requested to be a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee to better advocate for the hundreds of thousands of veterans living in Louisiana and ensure all veterans have the resources they need when reentering civilian life. On that committee, he focused on improving veteran access to quality health care and holding members of the VA accountable to our veterans.

Below are just some of the legislation Cassidy has worked on during his first term:

After hearing reports that over 100 VA nursing homes had higher rates of infections and decline in daily living skills than private facilities, Cassidy introduced bipartisan legislation to require the VA to publish the quality ratings of its 133 nursing homes nationwide, which passed as part of H.R. 5895. This information will help ensure the VA is held accountable for veterans’ outcomes and ensure they are receiving the best care possible.

As a member of the Senate VA Committee, Cassidy helped author and pass the VA MISSION Act to improve access and quality of VA health care for veterans.

Cassidy introduced and passed legislation to help veterans with military emergency medical technician (EMT) training get their civilian certifications and pursue a career as an EMT or other health professional after their military service. This legislation passed as part of the Comprehensive Addiction & Recovery Act (Sec. 105).

As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Cassidy successfully worked to secure an extension of the Work Opportunity Tax Credit that encourages employers to hire America’s veterans.

Cassidy authored the largest reform to our mental health system in decades, which passed as part of the 21st Century Cures Act to fix our broken mental health system. He also helped write several provisions included in the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act, to improve veteran access to quality mental health resources and combat the high rate of veteran suicide, which was passed by the Senate earlier this year.
